Varanasi: the classic beauty of northern India
In northern India’s state of Uttar Pradesh is the sacred city of Varanasi, once known as Benaras, an exalted pilgrimage centre central to Hindu mythology. The city’s chaotic and colorful environment has led to it being referred to as the spiritual capital of India. Tourists flock to this city to pay respect to the river Ganges and take in the splendor of the Kashi Vishwanath temple, which is the heart of Varanasi.
In November, the city comes alive with the Ganga Mahotsav and Dev Deepawali celebrations, illuminating its 80-plus ghats with thousands of lamps, creating a mystical sight known as the festival of the Gods.
In addition to its spiritual significance, Varanasi offers a rich cultural experience. The city is home to a multitude of temples, tanks, and narrow streets. Visitors can walk along bustling ghats, where they can watch the ebb and flow of the city’s energy. The Assi Ghat and Dashashwamedh Ghat are prime spots for this experience.
Beyond the spiritual allure, the city offers a wealth of historical and cultural points of interest. The Man Singh Observatory, near the Dashashwamedh Ghat, offers a glimpse into the brilliance of ancient Indian astronomers, while the Sarnath Museum showcases the rich history that lies just outside of Varanasi.
For those who aren’t content with merely taking in history and culture, the city also offers a variety of local cuisines, including kachori sabzi, baati chokha, and malaiyyo.
For those looking to go beyond the city, Sarnath, the site of Buddha’s first discourse after attaining enlightenment, is a mere 15km away. Also, the Chunar fort, about 40km from Varanasi, provides a fascinating glimpse into history and architectural wonder.
With its rich history, lively culture, and spiritual significance, Varanasi is a city quite like none other.
