All passengers travelling into or out of the UAE with more than Dh60,000 are now required to declare it to the customs officers. This applies to cash, gold, jewellery, diamonds, and other valuables. To facilitate the declaration process, the UAE government has introduced a new app called Afseh.
The decision to declare funds and valuables over Dh60,000 is part of the UAE’s efforts to combat money laundering. It is mandatory for all residents and visitors entering and exiting the country through airports, ports, and land borders to declare their funds and valuables.
However, each family member over 18 years of age is allowed to carry an amount not exceeding Dh60,000 without disclosing it to customs officers. This rule aims to ensure convenience for families while maintaining transparency in the declaration process.
The Afseh app, developed by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP), allows residents and nationals to submit their declaration details and declare the amount or value of cash and valuables. The app consists of six simple steps, and users have the option to update the value later if it changes during their travel.
Upon submission of all the details, residents will receive a QR code via SMS and email. They can present this code to customs officials upon arrival at the airport or border, eliminating the need for paperwork and reducing processing time.
This new system not only streamlines the declaration process but also facilitates currency exchange for visitors and residents. By showing the approval of the declaration form received from the ICP, individuals can exchange money without any hassle.
The Afseh app is available for both Android and Apple platforms and can be accessed through the UAE Pass. The service is free of charge. Additionally, residents and visitors can also declare their funds and valuables through the ICP’s website.
