Hotel Room Prices and Flights Surge as India Makes It to World Cup Final
Hotel room prices in Ahmedabad, the venue for the World Cup final on Sunday (November 19), have skyrocketed after India qualified for the final. According to a report from News18, hotel room rates in Ahmedabad are now as high as Rs100,000 (Dh4,411.36). Flight ticket prices have also seen a significant increase, with tickets from Mumbai to Ahmedabad selling for Rs32,000 (Dh1,411.63), up from the usual Rs5,000 (Dh220) to Rs7,000 (Dh308.79). New Delhi to Ahmedabad flights have also seen a jump in prices, now going for around Rs26,500 (Dh1,169).
The surge in prices is attributed to the excitement surrounding India’s qualification for the World Cup final, leading to a spike in searches for Ahmedabad. According to Santosh Kumar, Country Manager for India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Indonesia at Booking.com, the demand to watch the Indian cricket team play live has driven up the costs.
As the final approaches, hotel room rates in Ahmedabad are expected to continue rising, with basic rooms now going for around Rs10,000 (Dh441.12) per night. The prices for four and five-star hotel rooms have also been hovering around Rs100,000 (Dh4411.36). A quick search on Booking.com reveals that spending one night at the ITC Narmada in Ahmedabad on November 19, the day of the World Cup 2023 final, will set you back Rs2,36,000 (Dh10,410.46). Similarly, a room at Ahmedabad’s Hyatt Regency is available for around Rs2,38,360 (Dh10,514.57).
This situation mirrors what occurred ahead of the India-Pakistan World Cup league-stage fixture, where hotel costs had shot up considerably. Many fans had to opt for check-up packages at hospitals to secure affordable accommodation.
India is set to face Australia in the World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, aiming for their third World Cup triumph. The final match is expected to draw massive attention and further drive up prices for accommodation and travel.
