Review of Persona 5 Tactica: Caught in the Middle

November 14, 2023

Atlus has done it again with their latest release, Persona 5 Tactica, available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. The game offers deep and engaging turn-based mechanics that celebrate the iconic visuals and fast-paced battles of the original Persona 5 game.

The game follows the story of the Phantom Thieves as they find themselves embroiled in a case involving the disappearance of a well-meaning politico who was set to replace the despotic prime minister they previously defeated. New figures like spirited revolutionary Erina and kindly politician Toshiro add a breath of fresh air to the ongoing narrative, although their introduction may not provide enough access to the main game’s story for newcomers.

Persona 5 Tactica’s gameplay consists of elegant, self-contained engagements that are satisfying and moreish. It introduces a novel and refreshing take on the turn-based strategy genre, offering players gripping tactical decisions and puzzle-solving. Players control three Phantom Thieves, each with their own special powers to eliminate enemies and take cover, and the game’s action economy adds depth to the gameplay.

While the game does not offer the flexible time management of the original Persona 5, it introduces challenging side quests that require strategic problem-solving skills. Players can customize their entire roster of Phantom Thieves extensively, creating a meaningful layer of customization.

Though Tactica successfully brings new gameplay mechanics to the table, it does not escape the shadow of Persona 5 in terms of its narrative design. The game’s core cast of characters is delightful and well-developed, but without knowledge of their arcs from the original game, encountering them in Tactica might be overwhelming.

Persona 5 Tactica is an excellent strategy game, especially for fans of Persona 5 who are looking to revisit these characters, but not as much so for newcomers. The game offers modest accessibility options but lacks accommodations for colorblind players and adjustable subtitle sizes.

Having played over 200 hours of Persona 5 and numerous strategy and tactics games, my experience was vital when approaching Persona 5 Tactica for review. For more brain-teasing games, be sure to check out our list of the best PC strategy games and the guide to the best board games.
