Island Offers Indian Nationals Free Visa in Pilot Project
In a recent announcement, Indian nationals can now travel visa-free to Thailand and Sri Lanka, two popular destinations in Southeast Asia. The Sri Lankan foreign minister took to social media last week to reveal the list of countries from which tourists can enter the island visa-free. The official stated, “Cabinet approves issuing of free visas to India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia & Thailand with immediate effect as a pilot project till March 31”. This move aims to attract more visitors and revive the tourism sector, which has been heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Thailand, known for its vibrant tourism industry, has also announced visa-free entry for Indian travelers. The country’s prime minister stated that this decision is part of a plan to rebuild the tourism sector after the pandemic. Under the six-month trial, Indian visitors can stay in Thailand for up to 30 days. This change is expected to boost tourism and contribute to the country’s economic recovery.
Previously, tourists from India had to apply for a 15-day visa-on-arrival at immigration checkpoints in Thailand. The process required providing a bank statement and proof of accommodation. With visa-free entry, Indian travelers can enjoy a hassle-free experience and explore the diverse attractions that Thailand has to offer.
The tourism sector in Thailand plays a crucial role in the country’s overall GDP, accounting for almost 20 percent. However, due to the pandemic, the industry has faced significant challenges. The decision to offer visa-free entry to Indian and Taiwanese tourists reflects the government’s efforts to attract more visitors from these countries.
According to tourism ministry data, around 1.2 million Indians visited Thailand in the first nine months of 2023, making it the fourth highest number of tourists after Malaysia, China, and South Korea. This indicates the strong interest and demand for travel to Thailand among Indian nationals.
The pilot project for visa-free entry to Thailand and Sri Lanka for Indian nationals is expected to be in effect until March 31. The move is aimed at boosting tourism and supporting the recovery of the tourism sector in the two countries. With this new opportunity, Indian travelers can explore the wonders of Thailand and Sri Lanka without the hassle of obtaining a visa.
