Samsung, as part of its latest One UI 6 update, is introducing a new security tool called Auto Blocker for its Galaxy smartphone users. This tool aims to protect users from potentially harmful software.
Auto Blocker offers three main features. Firstly, it prevents the installation of apps from unauthorized sources, known as sideloading. This feature is specifically designed to defend against social engineering attacks, where scammers try to convince users to install malicious apps. However, Samsung recognizes the benefits of sideloading in terms of device customization and functionality control and will not disable it completely. Instead, this feature will be turned off by default and can be activated through the phone’s Settings menu.
The second feature of Auto Blocker involves security checks for apps to detect any malicious activity on the device. Unfortunately, this tool is currently not available on US carrier models.
The third feature allows users to block commands sent via USB cable. This feature provides protection in situations where others may have physical access to the device, such as when charging a phone at an airport or in public places.
Additionally, Auto Blocker offers advanced options, including the Message Guard upgrade. This upgrade protects first-party apps from zero-click attacks, where messages containing malicious code are sent to targets. The Message Guard will now also cover texts sent from popular messaging apps like Messenger, Telegram, KakaoTalk, and WhatsApp.
Users can also choose to prevent software updates via USB cable for added security when connecting to unknown USB ports. Although not explicitly mentioned in the text, this feature appears in the announcement image, suggesting the possibility of hidden features.
We have reached out to Samsung to inquire about any unlisted extra features and the availability of app security checks for US users. We will update this story accordingly.
Auto Blocker will be rolled out to all Galaxy devices compatible with One UI 6, including the Galaxy S23 series, S22 series, Z Fold 5, and Z Flip 5. Users should be on the lookout for the patch when it becomes available.
