WhatsApp has recently announced the launch of a new feature allowing users to link their email addresses to the messaging app. Known for forcing individuals to use their mobile numbers, the Meta-owned platform will now enable iOS users to log in using their email. This new option would allow users to log in if they are out of reach, preventing the trouble of SMS-based security codes. It is emphasized that the email address will remain private and hidden from others.
The new feature comes as part of an iOS 2.23.24.70 update, which also prompts users to add their email addresses to their accounts on the app. Even though the email provides an additional medium to access the app, WhatsApp will continue to use their phone number as the primary identifier.
Once the email ID is linked to the WhatsApp account, the user will receive a verification code for access to the platform. This feature will be particularly helpful in situations where network and technical issues prevent the delivery of the SMS-based verification code. To enable this feature, users are required to have the latest version of WhatsApp from the App Store on their iPhone, go to the settings, tap on Account, and then Email address. Once they had added their email, the app will send a verification code to the newly added email address.
To add yet another layer of functionality, a standalone messenger app for iPad is being tested. This new app will allow users to link their phone numbers to the iPad through a multi-device support feature. Moreover, it was not specified when this feature would be available to Android users.
As the popularity of WhatsApp continues to grow, the addition of email-based access is a move appreciated by many users. The app keeps finding new ways to improve user experience and encryption features. A statement by the app read, “Email helps you access your account. It isn’t visible to others.” The app constantly updates to stay abreast with new ideas and technological advancements, ensuring a safe and seamless process.
